On the morning of June 16, 2024, the Final Round of the RoboCar Innovation Competition 2024 for the 5th time with the theme ” Conquer Challenges” was organized by Vietnam – Korea University of Information and Communications Technology (VKU), The University of Danang. This is a robot innovation competition for students majoring in Information Technology and Computer Engineering Technology, Electronics from universities in the Central – Central Highlands region and the whole country, has been held annually since 2018 with an increasingly expanding scale.

Overview of the Final Round of the RoboCar Innovation Competition 2024 for the 5th time

Participating in the final round, on the VKU side, there were Dr. Huynh Ngoc Tho – Vice Rector; Leaders of Departments, Faculties, Centers, along with all lecturers, students at the University and members of 16 teams entering the final round.

The RoboCar 2024 Innovation Competition is an intellectual and practical playground aimed at encouraging creativity, exchanging, learning, and development of technological ideas for students from year 1; helping them apply knowledge of information technology and electronics such as Arduino Uno R3 circuit design, STM32, L298N motor circuit, HC06 bluetooth circuit, RF control circuit, TCRT5000 line detection sensor, and embedded programming on advanced programming languages, control techniques, PID algorithms, etc.

In the opening speech of the Robocar 2024 final round, Dr. Huynh Ngoc Tho – Vice Rector of the University, Deputy Head of the Organizing Committee of the competition said: The Robocar competition organized by VKU has created a useful playground for students majoring in information technology, computer engineering and electronics in the Central – Central Highlands region, helping students have the opportunity to practice the knowledge that they have learned and to apply creative ideas. In particular, they may gradually approach the development of digital technology and artificial intelligence to grasp the trends of society after graduation.

RoboCar 2024 was launched and registered from April 8 to May 15, 2024, and organized through 2 rounds before entering the final round. The elimination round (from May 15, 2024, to May 25, 2024), attracted more than 111 teams with nearly 929 students from many member universities of The University of Da Nang.

After the elimination round 1, 43 teams were selected. 16 excellent teams entered the final round after the elimination round 2. The teams must conduct an introduction round to talk about the process of forming the products. They were required to research and improve the RoboCar to ensure functions, to minimize wind resistance, turbocharged engines and improve quality to overcome obstacles in the fastest time, while reducing energy consumption for the Robot. Simultaneously, the autonomous robots use line detection algorithms and balance control algorithms to adjust the autonomous car to operate with stability and high speed when there are changes in environmental parameters.

The RoboCar teams will have to use many flexible competition strategies. The RoboCars are uniquely and creatively designed, made of materials such as: mica plastic, aluminum structure, foam,… with multi-strategy operating structures. The chips are AVR, STM32, etc. using a variety of programming languages ​​such as Assembly, KeilC, Python, etc. balance control algorithms, line detection, using electronic components from basic to advanced.

According to the rules, each team will build 2 Racing Cars and Autonomous Cars to participate in the race with a relay format consisting of 3 parts: Autonomous Car Race, Racing Car Race. The cars must complete the race with the tasks set by the organizers following the rules: for the Racing Car track: RoboCars are controlled manually, via radio waves (Wifi, RF, etc.); the main techniques applied: speed control, acceleration, direction of movement, robotic arms, etc. to perform tasks on the track. For the Autonomous Car track: RoboCars operate themselves, the main techniques applied: recognition, path tracing, etc. to complete tasks on the track.

Dramatic atmosphere in the Final Round

In the final round, in order to ensure objectivity and fairness, the jury consists of experienced lecturers in the field of control, automation and experts from enterprises. After the exciting and dramatic competition, the Organizing Committee awarded the first prize to the UCHIHAHAHA team; the second prize to the AQUAFINA team; the third prize to the LORD SPACE team; the fourth prize to the WIP team and awarded 12 Encouragement prizes to the remaining teams, with a total prize value of nearly 40 million VND.

The success of the RoboCar 2024 competition once again affirms the level of students as well as the quality of the training program, which is increasingly in line with the development orientation of VKU. This is an intellectual and practical playground, aiming to encourage creativity, exchanging, learning, and development of technological ideas for students from the year 1 at the university, serving as a launching pad to develop the human resources in information technology to a new level.
