Before we get to the post, I just wanted to say I am not compensated for anything posted on this site (you can check my disclosure here). I just want to spread the word on products I really like (or don’t !).
NOTE: I now use Superhero by IT and looooove it!
I needed new mascara.
But I did not want it to be tested on animals.
And I did not want it to cost a zillion dollars.
I knew this could be the equivalent of finding a needle in a haystack.
I was super excited to try the Organic Physician’s Formula mascara, but alas, it did not work for me. It was a fantastic price (less than 7 bucks) but I ended up with raccoon eyes. The look may work on them, but on me? Not so hot.
Then I heard about Josie Maran Cosmetics. Since I have an awesome mom (who reads my blog faithfully – Hi Mom!) she volunteered to buy me a Josie Maran mascara for my birthday!
Oh, it was exciting.
The mascara is priced at twenty-two smackers, which is a bit more than my Cover Girl LashBlast. But it IS cruelty free, paraben free and contains organic ingredients. Josie Maran Cosmetics even teamed up with City of Hope to donate mascaras to cancer patients/survivors based on mascara units sold. It sounded like a win.
Now to the
twenty-two million dollar question was – did it work?
Partly due to my obsession with Pic Monkey and partly due to my need to show you the awesome results of the mascara, here is a selfie of eyeballs.
And for those of you (like fellow cruelty-free friend Theresa) who would like a look at the brush, here you go. The obligatory wand shot…
And I tested it vigorously – I have been able to go all day without it smudging. I have cried watching these beagle rescue videos without it running. And I have given a 3 year old a bath wearing it. It stayed strong.
So, while I know it costs more than the drug store available brand, I am very happy with my new Mascara. I also believe this maybe my one and only selfie.
Anyone else have a cruelty free product they love and want to share?
You are looking at a box…. (Thanks Captain Obvious)
But this is not any box. This box is the best money I ever spent.
Because this box contains cards for every occasion. Birthdays, Birth of Babies, Congrats, Anniversary. You name it – there is a card for it.
I am sure there are other people who could throw something like this together on the fly.
I am not one of these amazing people.
I found this life saver at BJ’s for $8.99 and the cards (all 30 of them!) are totally awesome. I have used them multiple times (a few of you have even been on the receiving end of these cards).
This is a much better than my previous method (which was to not give a card… #FAIL!)
Want to know what my most favorite part is?
I am going to tell you anyway.
The file folders on the inside! The tabs on the inside help me be more organized (And, as we previously witnessed, I will take organization any way I can get it).
In my attempt to ‘green’ my life and live more organically (or as the hubby calls it ‘expensively’) I have been trying to find some good organic products.
I didn’t realize it, but the FDA does not do much to regulate cosmetics. They basically rely on companies to police themselves.
Here are my two cents (well, actually a bit more since these things cost about ten bucks. And Yes, I used coupons!)
Apparently luscious lashes come at a price.
Per Food Babe, most mascaras contain all sorts of harmful chemicals and ingredients. I had bought this from Target for about $7.00. I was soooo excited but, alas, I am not a huge fan.
It looks great when I put it on but by the time I walk out of the bathroom it begins to drip off my lashes. Inevitably by my first bathroom break at work, I am trying to clean up under my eyes.
I tried it for about a month (can’t tell you how many people told me ‘I looked tired’), but, in the end, it doesn’t seem to work for me. I am going to have to try something different – I love using mascara. For now, I went back to my ‘toxic-but-does-the-job” mascara.
I love this chapstick (or is it chap stick… I am not sure). It is utterly fantastic, makes my lips feel lovely and for $3.50 it is probably the least expensive item at Whole Foods. The first ingredient is my favorite – coconut oil!!!!
Antiperspirant uses aluminum-based ingredients that temporarily plugs the sweat ducts and prevents you from perspiring. It has been implied this can cause cancer… which is always on my mind since Dad’s diagnosis.
I decided to try Tom’s of Maine since I heard a lot of great things about it. Overall, I am pretty happy. I have been able to play a double header softball game without stinking like a decomposing animal – however, thank goodness I had a dark shirt on. (Deodorants only mask smell)
If I had something where sweating was frowned upon – like a wedding – I would probably use something stronger. But, at around $2.00 with my coupon, it is good for day to day.
